Ilex cornuta, commonly known as Chinese holly or horned holly, is a slow-growing, densely foliaged evergreen shrub. It is native to eastern China and Korea and attains a height of about 3 metres. The leaves are usually 5 spined, oblong and toothed. The fruits are red berries, which are larger than those of the European Holly.
Valued horticulturally for its attractive and distinctive rectangular foliage and for its large red berries. 
Ilex cornuta will tolerate a wide variety of soils and will grow in sun or shade.

  • SOIL TYPE: moist, well-drained, moderately fertile, humus-rich soil
  • FROST HARDY: yes.
  • DROUGHT TOLERANT: once established, and well mulched.
  • SIZE:  can reach 3m, or be kept clipped
  • FLOWERS: early summer, white. fruit; autumn, winter
  • USES: hedging, topiary, mass planting,feature shrub, containers, excellent impenetrable barrier.

  • RATE OF GROWTH: Moderate
  • CARE:Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Feed with a general purpose fertilizer before new growth begins in spring. Plants grown as free-standing specimens require minimal pruning - remove diseased or misplaced branches in spring. Trim plants grown as formal hedges in late summer. After pruning, apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted compost or manure around the base of the plant.
