Sweet Box should be more used. They remain the most neglected of evergreens. Amazingly easy to grow, more reliable and glossier than box, with shinier leaves and incredible-smelling flowers in winter followed by shiny black berries(hence the northern hemisphere name - Christmas Box), sarcococcas could be the plants to choose for edging formal beds, especially if the position includes some shade.

Left to its own devices or trimmed for a more formal look, few plants are less fussy or more forgiving in terms of soil and situation. And how many other plants offer the scent of summer in the middle of winter? Plant a clump by your door and you can stick your head out in mid-winter and be transported into spring.
